Bringing Patriotism Back to the Breakfast Table

I eat oatmeal for breakfast several times a week, so when I heard about the Golden Spurtle Contest in Scotland a few weeks back, I was a bit excited.  Granted, the Golden Spurtle is a technically a porridge contest and not an oatmeal contest, but the deliciously mushy breakfasts are really the same thing with different names across the pond.

A spurtle is an ancient Scottish kitchen tool traditionally used for stirring oatmeal and soup.  The Golden Spurtle is an annual competition held in Scotland between the world’s best and most dedicated oatmeal enthusiasts; it’s like the World Cup of porridge making.

This year’s competition was especially special because an American won it.  It was the first time an American entered the contest, let alone bring home the gold medal.

Matthew Cox is the talented preparer of porridge who brought glory back to the American breakfast table.  The best part, however, is that Mister Cox is part of Bob’s Red Mill, an grain company based in Oregon.  Not only is Oregon home to Beervana, but also now it can boast of the best gruel in the entire world!  Take that you other forty-nine states.
